Becky by Margaret V. Doran
Becky

Margaret V.Doran

She stepped out
dark eyes wide and innocent
into a fresh new world

The first shock waves
made those dark eyes blink
at the injustices

Then cynicism
narrowed those lovely dark eyes
to contemplative lines

And pain crept in
causing her dark eyes
to shield themselves

Fear laid hold
making hard edges around
the liquid pools

And unreasonable expectations
transformed them to clonic copies
of all the other eyes

Until new life was created
and her dark eyes
gained a speculative depth

And when the baby was born
the mother’s beautiful eyes
acquired softness

And her dark eyes, wide and maternal
gazed in to the eyes of her daughter
wide and innocent

So she held the baby to her breast
intuitively knowing the future of
those guileless eyes

And vowed that hers
would always be there
to watch over and protect
the light of her eyes.
