In the Autumn
Margaret V.Doran
Black angular fingers poking
through the fog
of autumn's shroud
leaves fallen and damp
soft carpet of reds and gold
Crisp air, icy white sun orb
pale daylight
brave crocuses
avoiding chestnuts
shivering in the autumn cold
Deer moving vaguely through the mist
noises muffled
chimney smoke
thick in the air
wooly bears in furry curled repose
Pumpkins thick and orange in fields rest
brown leaves
grapes revealed
sweetened now by frost
rain-swollen stream rising as it flows
The smells of harvest creeping through the clouds
smoke mixed
finches gone
bluejays here
stalwart roses glisten still with dew
All of nature bundling now for winter
thrifty squirrels
giant maples
garden snakes
to wait 'til buds of spring shall burst anew
