Mornings Are Best
Margaret V.Doran
Mornings are best
. . . even when I wake in the dark
of autumn light
no anticipation, no tension
lying beside you, at peace
all the worry wrinkles gone
breathing slow and calm
comfortable in the autumn of our lives
In the daytime, in the evening
. . . life's turmoil prevails
arguments arise that are a lie:
a response to systems
overloaded by responsibility
lacking control of circumstance
leaving us yoked and chaffing
tugging in dissimilar directions
So . . . mornings are best
. . . when conflicts are forgotten
and a fresh start stretches before us
unspoiled, unfettered, open to possibilities
somehow new despite time
it's true, mornings are best
the less of the day we see
the more beautiful it might be
