New Life
Margaret V.Doran
The asphalt was poured
ever so long ago
in a wide and welcoming strip
lined by rhododendrons and ferns
and tall, stately Douglas fir
but the traffic is meager
slow and gentle
instinctively choosing the center path
over the years, the trees
and ferns and flowers have grown
in graceful, curving arches
reaching out over the pavement
shedding leaves and needles
on the sterile bitumen
confusing the line between death and life
on the thickening mat
moss and lichen have taken root
and grasses and johnny-jump-ups
seeded by the wind
now grow and bloom
