Freshwater Pearl

Margaret V.Doran

For our daughter, Sarah, on the occasion of her 21st birthday

      Sheltered by the two halves
Nurtured and protected from the murky
obscurity to grow in your own way
though buried in the deep, dark mud
with strange new currents forever above

Not a plain sphere of perfection
      without flaw or individuality
but intricate in form and shade
      unlike any other, possessing textures
and secretive shadows and depths to be explored

      Creamy iridescence catching the light
      reflecting uniquely back exquisitely
Creating a compelling mystique, an enigma
your very strength and beauty born of adversity
A precious nugget to be cherished in an open hand

      Deserving of pure gold:
the quiet luster of white gold
the soft colors of Black Forest Gold
delicate greens and full roses to adorn
and surround our freshwater pearl come of age
