The Rabbit
Margaret V.Doran
It ventures into the grass, the rabbit
choosing the most tempting morsels
hopping from here to there
satisfying his hunger
Ever alert, the rabbit
his ears twitching, listening
his eyes darting, looking
his dining uninterrupted
Occasionally he stops, the rabbit
sits perfectly still
attunes all of his senses to danger
goes back to savoring his choices
Everyday they come, the dogs
to chase the rabbit
in frenzied joy
for the thrill of pursuit
It lunges to safety, the rabbit
and breathes hard
and waits silently for the dogs to go
and does not know that they will
He ventures into the grass, the rabbit
beautiful new day, everyday
delectable provisions from God on the ground
yesterday's fear unremembered
This poem has a grammatical structure useful for teachers in working with children above grade 4. It is a puzzle or hidden "treasure."
